attendance

Ms. Wells

                      WHY IS ATTENDANCE IMPORTANT?

Studies show that students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement can appear early in a child's school career.

                       JYKDCS ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students should be present in school every day with the exception of:

  • Illness

  • Approved religious holidays (i.e., Rosh Hashanah, Eid, Onam, etc.)

  • Family emergencies related to the student

In the event that a student is absent, the parent / guardian should:

  • Notify the school (student’s homeroom teacher)

  • Provide a parental note

  • If a student is absent 3 or more days, a doctor’s note is required

If a student becomes ill with a communicable disease (chicken pox, meningitis, strep throat, etc.), please contact the school nurse.  Once documentation is received from a physician, arrangements will be made for the student to receive assignments and/or instructional support*

                              STUDENT LATENESS POLICY

  • Students must be in their class for attendance ten minutes after their start time (8:30am) to be marked “Present”

  • A student is considered late as of 8:41 AM

  • Excusable latenesses include:

    • Doctor or Dentist Appointments

  • Unexcused latenesses include: Oversleeping, missing the bus, mechanical difficulties, etc.

  • Students who arrive after 10 AM will not be allowed into school unless they are accompanied by a parent/guardian and provide a doctor’s note

  • No student will be allowed in the building after 11 AM with or without a doctor’s note

                    ATTENDANCE/TRUANCY INFORMATION

  • According to Pennsylvania law, a child is truant if they have three or more unexcused absences during one year. A child is "habitually truant" if they have six or more unexcused absences in one school year.

  • Students who are absent for 10 consecutive days without written contact to the school will be officially withdrawn from the school

  • An intervention plan will be implemented for students who have excessive absences and/or lateness'

  • 25 or more absences will result in student retention the following academic school year

  • Excessive absences and/or tardiness that is not corrected after meeting with specific intervention staff will result in the District Attorney’s office being contacted for truancy concerns
